MCD SwayShade™

One of the latest products developed by the MCD Research and Innovations Group (R & I) is called the MCD SwayShade™.  A number of manufacturers are designing coach models to be more aerodynamic by slanting the windshields further back than in the past.  These designs typically cause cockpit side windows, especially on the driver’s side, to be considerably wider at the bottom than at the top.  A traditional shade, moving straight down, cannot and will not cover the front lower corner of these new, more angled windows.  Several OEM coach manufacturers facing this dilemma asked MCD if we could resolve the problem they were facing with their newly designed cockpit side windows.  OEMs know that MCD has a sterling reputation for being able to come up with innovative solutions to solve virtually any problem situation.  And, once again, MCD delivered!

The patent-pending MCD SwayShade™ was an invention of necessity due to the more aerodynamic shape many coach manufacturers are working to achieve these days.  As if by magic, the new MCD SwayShade™ is actually able to not only travel down but also sideways at the same time providing coverage needed for the lower forward corner of the window on these newly designed motorhomes!  This new shade design has an adjustable, designed-in, “kick forward” feature which enables the shade to completely cover the window providing full privacy and sun protection.  The "kick forward" can be as little as 1" to as much as 12" depending upon the particular requirement.

Initially, this shade design will be a designed-for-OEMs-only type of item produced in both manual and powered day/night shade versions.  Production is already underway; MCD is currently supplying this new innovative shade system to a number of different OEMs including, but not limited to, Winnebago and Newmar.  Look for this mind-blowing product in numerous 2011 models from a number of OEMs. Again, the SwayShade™ is provided to RV manufacturers ONLY, not direct to the consumer.

To give you a better understanding of how the MCD SwayShade™ works, take a look at the short video below.  The light black line coming straight down from the front edge of the roller shade assembly represents the path a conventional shade would travel when pulled down.  The red outline represents the shape of one of these new types of windows.  Note how much of the lower forward corner of the window would not be covered with a conventional shade which as shown in this particular video is 4".  Now watch what happens as the new MCD SwayShade™ travels down.  Notice that as the SwayShade™ is lowered, it also moves forward so as to cover the gap in the lower corner of the coach window. When retracting, the SwayShade™ moves up and aft as it winds back onto the roller shade.  Pretty interesting, don’t you think?  One of those “How in the world does that do that?” moments. Just another example of MCD leading-edge innovation.

Take a look at the short video below, and stay tuned for more innovative products coming from MCD!!
